It was 87 or 88 and I was up late watching Headbanger's Ball when I 1st
heard of Riot. I thought how could there be 2 bands with the word Riot
in their name, then I heard the beginning of the song Bloodstreets and
it immediatly grabbed me that I went out and bought the cassette to
Thundersteel. I didn't even know there were many albums before that
until I heard the song Outlaw on a late night radio special. Another
catchy song by such an underated band. When I heard that the
Thundersteel lineup was getting back together and doing a new album I
was pretty excited. Immortal Soul is to me the album of the year for
2011. God Bless. Forest Kegley

Riot was my first ever rock band to see in concert back 30
years ago when they opended for UFO. At that point it was beyond doubt
that I was hooked as there is nothing like a love heavy rock show like
the one you put out that night to share the spiritual connectivity of
music. Since that show music has been my passion from guitarist, song
writer, entertainment lawyer and concert producer and promoter. Thank
you for your inspiration. Like our spirits, music, your music, is

Being 20 years old, I'm a bit younger than most fans of Mark here. I
became aware of Riot after seeing the videos for "Restless
Breed" and "Bloodstreets" on VH1 Classic in 2003. It
wasn't until 2009 when I got Fire Down Under off of iTunes. From that
point on, I was hooked. I think as a fan, Mark Reale will be remembered
as the guy who waved the flag for Riot from day one until the day he
died. He didn't seem to care about how successful Riot were in the US or
elsewhere, although it helped. He was in it to make music and Riot took
up a little over 35 years of his life. It saddens me as a music
journalist as well because I had been wanting to get an interview with
Mark months before he slipped into the coma. Rolling Stone Magazine may
not acknowledge Mark's passing but like I said, it wouldn't have
mattered to him: he has us, the fans. Rest in peace Mark. Shine on,
warrior!

I´m still so much sad for the terrible notice of your departure Mark.A
friend of mine send me the notice via e-mail and I breakdown in tears.
The first time I heard a Riot song was in 1981 when a compilation album
of several hard rock and heavy metal bands named ¨Metalmania¨came to
my hands and faster to my ears. When I heard ¨Road Racing¨I inmidiatly
fall in love with Riot..And your Great guitar Magic touch! Years came
and gone and since that day every Riot album enter in my home...And in
my heart. I saw you live tree times in my country(Spain) and never
forget the concerts in Palencia near of my hometown(Valladolid) for the
attitude in for the show and the audience, your grattitude, your
warmth..And your quiet and permenent simle..A great person and an
enormous songwritter and player! You and the other Riot members signed
my records and posters..The ¨Metalmania¨record too, the first album
where the first Riot song touch my heart. And there´s a phrase that you
put in all of those albums and posters..Shine On! I wanna tell you that
you will¨Shine On!¨ Always in my heart through you music legacy! Have
peace and still Rockin´ in Heaven..See you There! I can heard the last
notes of the last time that I saw you in concert at the Metalway
festival in Zaragoza(Spain)..I will never forget that concert..That
Festival was the last time that I saw Ronnie Dio alive too..So special.
Shine On,Mark! Riot Will Always Rules!...Immortal in Our Souls!!! David

I just saw Riot at BB Kings. It was one of the best Metal shows that
I've seen in a long time. The band truly played an incredible show even
knowing that Mark wasin the hospital. They were playing for Mark. Mark's
guitar case was on the stage. From one Brooklynite to another...God
Bless you and thanks for all your talent, and leaving us with an
incredible band. Riot...Keep Rockin! I'm sure Mark would want it that
way.

I remember listening to "Thundersteel" when I was 10-years-old
and being instantaneously blown away. Since then, I've been a dedicated
Riot fan and have essentially grown up with their music. I never got the
chance to meet Mark, or even see him perform, but he was an inspiration
on me, personally, and will be missed more than words can say. Now, I
just hope he can find peace in rock 'n' roll heaven with Dimebag,
Hendrix, Rhodes, and Bonham. God bless Mark, the Reale family, his
bandmates in Riot, and all the fans who made them successful...Shine on,
Mark, your music lives on!

I was so sad to hear of Mark's passing. I first heard of
him and Riot through Joe Anthony and 99.5 KISS in San Antonio. Was lucky
enough to see them on tour with Molly Hatchett and AC/DC at the
Convention Center Arena. Still, to this day, the best concert I have
been to. Not since have I a seen the entire crowd stand and sing the
whole time through all the bands. Afterwards, my friend and I spotted
Joe Anthony walking across the street and shouted out to him. We spent
about three minutes talking to him about Riot with cars honking and
people yelling at us until a cop made us move on through the
intersection. My condolences to friends and family. RIP Mark Reale.

You, Guy and the rest of the guys on the first RIOT Album inspired 5

endless hours of fun. RIOT showed that 5 guys from BROOKLYN can hold
their own with Kiss, Aerosmith & Ted Nugent. The first 3 albums are

is still rockin' and takin' names. GOD BLESS YOU MARK, RIP IN R&R

Mark was a great friend for many years. Having met at the Razzle Dazzle
club on Austin Hwy in 1980, we became friends who loved heavy metal
music. I was known as the girl who loved music and not the musicians, so
we got along great. He was always willing to sign autographs for his
fans and talk to them, a real person not a rock star. He loved san
antonio and spend almost all of his time when he was not in the studio
or on the road here. I was raised on a large ranch in the hill country
and had all the cool toys, trampoline, horses, motorcycles and just
plain fun things to do. I remember the times he and the band, or other
musician friends would come out to have fun in the country and escape
the pressures of rock world if even for a little while, seeing them jump
on the tramp and ride horses was a sight. My family had a standing rule
"no drugs, alcohol or groupies" and they had a place to relax.
For many years while on the road they tried to make sure they had a down
day in san antonio. After born in america album, mark moved into our
home while he was working on his next project, narita. My funniest
memories are of him on the sofa, guitar in hand writing songs on his
tablet and watching game shows with my mother. who would think the rock
guitar god was sitting watching game shows... He was a maniac runner and
treasured his state of texas flag running shorts, every day a run in the
texas heat then back to song writing. We had a old dairy barn and the
guys would crank up the amps and blast tunes for the upcoming album,we
had fun until we painted the floor of the barn red, while painting the
cabinets for narita and got in trouble with my family. mark was always
the jokester, would make you laugh until you cried stop.he would sit and
play guitar all day, one riff after another. He was never the rock star
to me just a friend that introduced me to the life of a musician as a
person. I was excited to hear of the new album just released and knew he
was always making music it was truly his life love. Your dedication to
the rock world will be missed. SHINE ON MARK and rest in peace.

My first memories of Mark Reale and Riot start with San Antonio’s KMAC/KISS
radio DJ’s Joe Anthony & Lou Roney playing songs from that debut
album like Rock City , Tokyo Rose & Overdrive. A few years later I
would be working with those guys on KISS where I premiered to San
Antonio Riots second album Narita. I witnessed Riot headlining shows
with Budgie at the Texas Theater and opening for any number of bands in
the Hemisfair Arena. There were times I would run into Mark or I’d get
a call from the record company to do an interview to help promote the
band’s latest release. At some point I started getting calls from
listeners informing me that Mark was living here. I’ll never forget in
the early 1980’s on my first trip to New York City I just happened to
look up at a tall building and there up in a Manhattan office window in
was Tior Riot’s woolly monster peering back at me. To this day I still
feel I was meant to see that, but I’m not sure why. Unfortunately like
others before him Mark has left the band, but his spirit will always
reside in Rock City. Tom ‘T-Bone’ Scheppke (KISS/KZEP/X1067)

I was just informed of the news of the passing of Mark Reale, today. My own personal views, Riot and Mark are one of my earliest ventures into hard rock and heavy metal. He and his band are one of my all time great influences of my life. Fire Down Under,Riot Live (EP) Narita, Thundersteele. Lets not forget one of the longest lasting and enduring logo's in all of rock music, (The Seal.)
To Mark Reale. Thank You. You are an influence and role model. To his family and friends, you have nothing to be ashamed about. His music and talent will be remembered through his music.
Thank You.

Can't believe this sad news, or how long it's taken to find out. I first saw RIOT open for AC/DC On the HTH tour, the next year one from our bunch of a band i worked with at the time met Mark at the Razzle Dazzle club and invited him over to our rehearsal space to jam a bit And to our surprise he showed up! He jammed a few times, told us tales of the road, and wowed us all with what he could do on his candy apple red Strat. I gave him a ride home that night, and was so impressed by what a truly nice guy he was. Very quiet and soft spoken, he let his guitar do most of the talking. We met again several years and tours later, and I was priveleged to photograph the band and do a small write up about them. Mark hadn't changed at all, his perseverance and dedication to keep RIOT going through some lean times had a lot to do with the loyalty and dedication of his fans, (I met people who had flown in from Tokyo to attend a biker concert in a field in Poteet once that RIOT headlined) especially his Texas fans was very much appreciated by Mark and the many musicians who played with him through the years.
Also, the quality inherent in the body of work that Mark produced in his life will stand the test of time, and all of us who loved him and his music will continue to enlighten others, young and old, to the beautiful music that came from the soul of this amazing and brilliant musician.
Rest in Peace Mark, we will never forget you.

I heard of Mark passing later than I should have and I regret it terribly. From the first time hearing "Maryanne", to my 100th time covering "Out Law" in my bar band, the excitement and adrenaline never ceased. It was always RIOT. It Was always Mark and that unbridled tone monster of a guitar that kept me coming back for more.
A talented man and a Modern poet for all who who dare to step out of the box for a few minutes and listen. For those who did, Mark will always be in our hearts and on our playlists. It is a legacy few men could really earn. Mark showed us how to earn fan loyalty, and he always stayed true.

Just ran across this site and took a trip down memory lane, with many fond memories. I first met the guys in RIOT when they were very young, 1979is when Lou Roney gave me one of their original promo albums. Mr. Roney was a client of my Dads (accounting) so I used to get a lot of free tickets to the shows back in the day. I met the guys over at the Villa Italian restaurant with Joe Anthony, Lou and the rest. later, I lived in Universal City, TX while going to school and running a Bowling Alley there (Summit/Billy Dans) and I used to Run with Mark up and down Pat Booker rd. and jam out. We didn't say much until we finished, mainly small talk, he told me his girlfriend lived in the neigborhood behind my apartment complex (Kitty Hawk Apts.)... He got a big laught when I told him to come on by, I was in Apt. 2112..... At any rate, during that time (1982) I had gotten some tickets on the front row to see Rainbow, Riot & Saxon and my seat got bumped by an MTV camera. I almost got into a fight with an usher who was trying to get me to move, and we ended up backstage arguing. Mark saved my life just as the cops were arriving to throw me out, saying "Hey I know this guy he's OK!".... Then he got one of the Stone City people to sort things out, and I ended up partying with Rainbow backstage, of course meeting Blackmore and then partying with everyone afterward.
What an unforgettable night that was!
I attended Mark's funeral at St. Mark's (it is mere blocks from where I live) and expressed my condolences to Mark's dad, who was just heartbroken. Rest in Peace, Mark I thoroughly enjoyed our jogs and conversations we had during that brief, wild time in my life......

My intro was Born..., the sound of of unpolished steel, but brilliant picking....my soul was capturred. He was an always will be my deepest passion!!! Warm regards and love from little Denmark.
Still remember you in the hard times, Mark. We will meet someday and I will thank you for all your dedication for Heavy Metal. Shine on, warrior!
I'll always remember the day my buddy and I brought back the Fire Down Under LP on the day of it's release, heard those opening riffs of Swords and Tequila, and I became a life-long fan of Riot. Still listening in 2020. You and your music will SHINE ON through eternity, Mark! God bless!
i first heard the song outlaw on a US radio station from Belleville, On (Q92??) while doing homework while in grade 9 or 10 im 55 and still play this stuff on guitar, MAGIC !!!!!! Riot, Judas Priest and Thin Lizzy taught me how to play guitar. Thanks Mark !!
I remember seeing Riot perform at many block parties in Brooklyn, and later on at the Rock Palace on Quentin Rd, Brooklyn in the late seventies. They were neighborhood legends who made good. The Iommi family lived around the block from me and Ventura was in many of my school classes. R.I.P. Mark Reale.
